Norway provides 1 million USD for vocational training in Vanni

Last updated: 31/05/2010 // Wednesday the 26th of May, Norway signed a 1 million USD agreement with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) to provide vocational training to the returnees to Vanni.

The purpose of the project is to address the need for skilled labor requirements in the North –in particular the Vanni- as part of the transition of the people and economy from a state of conflict to one of normal activity.  After the civil war and humanitarian crisis, people are now being resettled, and there is an urgent need for skilled labor that can participate in the reconstruction of the north. The programme will provide skill, to enable facilitate livelihood and thereby assist the returnees to get back to a "normal" life.

First priority will be rehabilitation of existing training centers that do not have to be completely rebuilt.  Training courses will begin as soon as the centers are equipped by the Project and qualified staff  are contracted.  Training will be delivered by existing partners from Jaffna and Vavuniya (e.g., the Vocational Training Authority and/or Sarvodaya).  Those trainees with credit for prior learning or enrolled in courses will have on-the job training as part of the rehabilitation or construction of the training centers.
